    The Early Music Ensembles of Moravian College pay tribute to the 500 th anniversary of Martin Luther’s protestant revolution with a program entitled “Luther and his Legacy.” The program includes several settings of Luther’s signature hymn “Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott,” (“A Mighty Fortress is our God”) along with sacred an secular works by Luther’s contemporaries and later Protestant composers, such as Schütz, Telemann, and Bach. The Monteverdi Ensemble, a one-on- a-part vocal quintet, will be joined by the Baroque Ensemble (flute, cello, harpsichord, and organ) and the Krummhorn Quartet.

    Maestro Spieth has programmed an evening of sweepingly beautiful orchestral music.  The program will feature Brahms’ Concerto for Violin, Cello, & Orchestra, Op. 102, in A minor, highlighting guest artists Pamela Frank, violin, & Peter Wiley, cello.  Ms. Frank, a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, has an active international career across a varied range of performing activity.  Mr. Wiley has been a member of the Beaux Arts Trio & the Guarneri Quartet, and is associated with the Marlboro Music Festival since 1971.  Both Ms. Frank & Mr. Wiley are on the faculty of Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music.

    Additional repertoire to be heard this evening will be:  Salerni’s Upstream/About Two Miles, Walton’s Crown Imperial, & Ravel’s Bolero.  This concert has been made possible, in part, by a grant from the Dexter F. & Dorothy H. Baker Foundation.

    As a precursor to the ever-popular Moravian College Christmas Vespers held at Central Moravian Church, this preview is offered for those unable to attend that annual December event.  All of the music is presented (College Choir, Women’s Chorus, Brass Ensemble, and other music ensembles) – all of the appropriate hymns are sung, and the charming Morning Star, led by a youthful soloist, is presented.  Catch the holiday spirit early.  Remember – the musical prelude begins at 7 PM.
